My Spouse Told Me That They Think We Should Separate – They Want to Move Out – What Should I Do?
What is the best strategy to restore your relationship after your spouse says they want to leave? Keep in mind, this tactic is for those who want to restore their marriage or relationship when the other person wants a divorce, or wants out.
Agree.
You should say something like,..
- “Okay, I understand. Maybe that would be good for both of us.”
This immediately reverses the feelings of being trapped and eases the tension that would result from you trying to argue or convince them that they are wrong to want to leave.
Put a good label on it.
Show them that you understand what they say, and that it makes sense to you.
- “We need to be apart. Things are just not the way they used to be.”
Whatever reason they give you for separating, just repeat it back to them in a positive light. You could even make it more clear that you understand and agree by…
Offering to help.
- “Do you want you to help you find a place? I can help you pack if you like.”
Smile and act completely fine. Be optimistic. I know it actually tears you up inside… but you should never show that. You should never convey that you are in pain because they are leaving. It only pushes them farther away. Just agree, put a good label on it, and offer to help. That will make a powerful statement to them, and they will realize that, not only are YOU losing THEM; but THEY are LOSING you, too.
Follow these steps EXACTLY, and they will wonder why you aren’t arguing about it. Most of the time, if you follow these steps IMMEDIATELY after they bring it up, it will reverse their desire to leave you. They will begin to argue the other side, and tell you all the reasons you should be together.
It’s reverse psychology. It’s mental Jui Jitzu (see my article on the subject). It always works. Remember, There is no ‘magic’ to getting your ex back. It’s all about dealing with their emotions, and subconsciously changing their perception of you.
